While many of the top TV brands announced their latest 2024 models back at CES 2024, Sony has given it a few months before announcing their new line-up. Now the time has come to figure out when the Sony Bravia 9 release date is. This is Sony’s new flagship model, replacing last year’s X95L with a brand-new naming convention. No doubt that the Bravia 9 is going to be one of the best mini-LED TVs to date.
Aside from figuring out when this new flagship will be available to buy, we’re also going to have a look at the revealed specs so far, as well as the price tag. There’s still much to learn at this early stage, but Sony has provided some key details. We’ll be keeping as up to date as possible as we count down the days until release.
Sony Bravia 9 release date prediction
Not too much is known about the exact release date of the new Sony Bravia 9 (XR90) mini-LED TV. On the plus side, these TV releases do get pretty predictable with a similar launch schedule year in, year out. Let’s look back to some previous dates to get an idea of when it will launch.
- Sony X95L release date: May 2023
- Sony X95K release date: May 2022
- Sony X95J release date: June 2021
Sony launch their new TVs around the same time each year, not too long after other brands like Samsung and LG – who aim for an early Spring release. The past two flagship mini-LED TVs launched in early-mid May, so we expect the same for the Bravia 9. However, the UK store page does mention that it will ship from the 10th of June.

Sony released a first look video this April to give a closer look at the features, boasting the Bravia 9’s status as their brightest ever 4K TV. It will be available 65″, 75″, and 85″ sizes – though the smallest 65 inch model won’t be available in the UK or wider Europe. This seems like a strange choice giving this is a popular size in the region.
So, while other brands are investing time into OLED, Sony is instead going all out on pushing mini-LED with their latest flagship. What Hi-Fi? has reported on their new backlight technology (XR Master Blacklight Drive) which is an evolution of last year’s X95L, with Sony claiming to produce OLED-level blacks. There are 325% more local dimming zone according to Sony’s press release, but no exact number is given. This will provide both a higher peak brightness and finer control for stunning HDR visuals.
It comes with excellent features for gaming as you’d expect with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate with VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode). We can’t imagine the response time will be as good as OLED, and the TV will only feature two HDMI 2.1 ports – though eARC connectivity is there to easily connect your home theater speaker setup. A full list of specs is available to see on the Sony website.

Is the Sony Bravia 9 XR90 mini-LED?
Yes, the new Sony Bravia 9 is indeed a mini-LED TV. This means the TV uses a much better backlighting solution than standard LED TVs, with full array local dimming for greater control of brightness and contrast levels. It is Sony’s brightest 4K TV to date, with “thousands of Mini LEDs” powering its display which reportedly reaches up to 4,000 nits at its peak.
Is the Bravia 9 an 8K TV?
No, the Sony Bravia 9 is actually a 4K television. This means it uses a resolution spanning 3840 x 2160 pixels rather than the 7680 x 4320 of 8K. Even still, 4K remains the standard for the majority of consumer displays, as there really isn’t much native 8K content out there at the moment.
Final word
That just about wraps up everything we know about this new Sony mini-LED so far. It doesn’t look like the release date is too far away, and we’ll get a better picture of the technical specs and performance once hands-on reviews are conducted.
